Student Internships

Chemistry majors are able to complete an internship either during the school year or during the summer months.  Students normally do internships in their junior or senior year, as 2 years of chemistry are required before permission is granted.  Three credit hours can be obtained for an internship if the student enrolls in CHEM-381, Internship.  The internship must involve a minimum of 10 hours of work per week for one semester or 4 weeks of full-time work on a laboratory project in cooperation with industry at an industrial site.  Before beginning an internship, the student must submit a proposal to be approved by both the chemistry faculty and the on-site supervisor.  Upon completion of the work, a written and oral report must be presented to the department.  In recent years, students have obtained internships with the following companies:

  • Dekka Battery

  • DuPont

  • GalxoSmithKline

  • Great Lakes Analytical

  • Merck

  • Rohm and Haas

  • Teva Pharmaceuticals

  • USDA

  • ViroPharma

  • Wyeth
