"Using Tricks from the Electronics Industry to Aid in the Detection, Diagnosis and Treatment of Human Diseases"

 

This year's Keynote Speaker is Ursinus alumnus (1986) Professor Joseph DeSimone of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He is the William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the director of the NSF Science Technology Center for Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes.  His research focuses on polymer synthesis and processing, from the fundamental chemistry to developing efficient and environmentally friendly methods of producing polymers and polymer-based devices.  Professor DeSimone has published nearly 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles and has nearly 100 patents in his name.  He has presented talks around the world, starting twenty years ago with an ISC talk in 1986 and most recently with distinguished lectures at the University of Illinois, NC State University, Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Akron.

Professor DeSimone has recently been elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  In 2005, Dr. DeSimone was awarded the ACS Award for Creative Invention.  Professor DeSimone is the recipient of numerous awards from local ACS sections including, North Carolina and Delaware.
