Biography:
Bruce Rideout spent his early years in the suburbs of Boston, and earned an A.B. degree from Boston University with concentration in economics. A subsequent, non-degree bachelor's equivalence in biology at B.U. was followed by graduate work in Biopsychology at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he studied with Neil Carlson, and received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Graduate research focused on higher order conditioning in mice, human evoked responses, and the effects of REM sleep deprivation in mice.

Since coming to Ursinus in 1979, Dr. Rideout has taught Experimental Design (PSY 210W), Sensation and Perception (PSY 320), Behavioral Neuroscience (PSY 325, until 2001), Neuroscience Lab (PSY 327), and Environmental Psychology (PSY/ENV 282, since 2001), as well as Introductory Psychology (PSY 100). His research has included the effects of caffeine and tryptophan on sleep and performance, the effect of music on spatial task performance (the Mozart effect), and most recently has focused on student attitudes on environmental issues. Additional interests include the history and philosophy of science, hemispheric specialization, consciousness studies, and research on paranormal phenomena. For recreation, Prof. Rideout enjoys reading, music, photography, and restoring a family cottage on the coast of Maine.
