Here is a lab that shows a practical
application of all that information on DNA
you have been teaching. It involves the true story of a man
(Dr. Baker) who used genetic code and the BLAST program to
prove that poaching of whales was still going on after whales were
given protected status. The lab comes with a class set of
disks of Dr. Baker's
files, the book that the
story comes from, and copies of a section of the story for the
students to read. A possible scenario for the lab is to hand
out the sheet the Blast Site the night before the activity.
You can then discuss the Blast program the next day. After that you
can have them read the article and you can assign segments of DNA
for the students to run through the Blast program. Usually
after that, the students can run the segments through the program
and fill out the student sheet with no problems.
