You have probably heard the word “acid” used in conversation before.  An “acid” usually refers to a substance that has a high concentration of the hydrogen ion [H+] present.  We usually say something is an acid if the concentration of hydrogen ion is greater than that in pure water.  If the concentration of hydrogen ions is less that that in pure water, it is called basic. This acidity, or amount of hydrogen ion, is measured by the pH scale.
